6th Grade

6th Grade

6th Grade
Overview
Sixth grade is the first year of full immersion in the middle school way of life.  Our sixth graders build on the foundations laid during elementary.  They will continue to practice the more complex mathematical concepts such as exponents, decimals, and fractions, and they will begin to touch on negative integers and algebraic formulas.  A big focus in sixth grade is taking the grammar skills learned in previous grades and writing comprehensive assignments and papers.

Bible
In sixth grade, we continue to utilize Bob Jones and begin to explore and learn about varying worldviews.  This ensures that students have a strong biblical foundation as they move up through middle school and onto high school.

Math
Students will focus on the skills they have learned in previous years with an emphasis on the understanding and application of multiplication, division, fractions, and some decimals. Fact mastery continues to be a major focus to ensure a strong foundation for more complex skills developed later.  Finally, critical thinking and problem-solving are developed in each lesson through teaching techniques, story problems, and problem-solving lessons.

Language Arts
Language arts in 6th grade continues to emphasize grade-appropriate grammar concepts and skills, and students delve deeper into research methods and formal writing concepts. Students continue to have dedicated class time devoted to literature and the concepts entailed such as understanding character development, themes, etc.  We continue to focus on and wrap-up The Chronicles of Narnia series began in fourth grade while building on the skills learned in previous grades, with special focus on reading comprehension, critical thinking, and verbal and written summarization. Finally, iPads apps are used to reinforce learned computer skills and beginning research skills.

Science
We use Bob Jones curriculum to study matter and energy, astronomy, heredity, and the intricacies of cells and organisms the nervous system, and the immune system.

History
In sixth grade at OCA, our social studies curriculum encompasses several major ancient civilizations that shaped the course of global history.  Students will attain a broad understanding of the complexities of society and government and skill in analyzing historical and current events, including government, philosophies, cultures, and religions.

By the end of 6th grade, students will:

Bible
  • Have a foundational understanding of the nature and character of God
  • Understand and recognize the qualities of His people, and His Church
  • Recognize major biblical characters throughout the Bible
  • Know what it means to know Jesus Christ and live for him

Math
  • Extend knowledge of numbers to negative numbers and develop an understanding of absolute value
  • Add, subtract, multiply ,and divide positive rational numbers
  • Apply properties of operations to rewrite numbers in equivalent forms
  • Extend understanding of operations with integers
  • Apply previous understanding of arithmetic expressions to algebraic expressions
  • Develop an understanding for solving equations and inequalities
  • Understand ratio and unit rate concepts and use them to solve problems
  • Apply previous understanding of the coordinate plane to solve problems
  • Model and solve problems involving two-dimensional figures and three-dimensional figures
  • Develop an understanding of statistics and determine measures of center and measures of variability
Language Arts

Literature:
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings
  • Analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing
  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening
  • Vary sentence patterns for meaning, reader/listener interest, and style

Spelling & Grammar:
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
  • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 6 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies
  • Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation of a word or determine or clarify its precise meaning or its part of speech
  • Verify the preliminary determination of the meaning of a word or phrase (e.g., by checking the inferred meaning in context or in a dictionary)
Science
  • Recognize and identify intricacies of cells and organisms
  • matter and energy
  • Understand astronomy and recognize key elements of our solar system
  • Understand the basic particulars of heredity
  • Recognize and understand the nervous system and the immune system
